Rawajati Bridge will Be Demolished

Triggering flooding in settlements around Ciliwung River, Rawajati Bridge at Kalibata, South Jakarta, is going to be demolished by Jakarta Provincial Government.

We will demolish that bridge (Rawajati Bridge) because its existence is obstructing water flows

“We will demolish that bridge (Rawajati Bridge) because its existence is obstructing water flows,” stated Head of Roads and Bridges Maintenance Section for Jakarta Public Works Department, Juani Yusuf, Friday (12/5).

According to Yusuf, the bridge’s existence makes the trashes that got carried away by water flood from Bogor stuck under the bridge foundation. As a result, water flows become obstructed and cause flooding to surround area. But since the bridge is located in a prone flood point, the demolition needs process and thorough calculation.

“The process takes time, we cannot demolish it carelessly. Moreover, it is already rainy season. If flood hit during the process, it would be dangerous,” he uttered.

Previously, Jakarta Governor Basuki ‘Ahok’ Tjahaja Purnama had asked Public Works Department to immediately demolish Rawajati Bridge.

“I told to Public Works Department Head to demolish that old bridge. If the bridge was not demolished, trashes from Bogor would be stuck under the bridge,” he said at that time.
